MS. MARVEL

MAIN ON END TITLE SEQUENCE

Lead Artist Design, Animation, Compositing and Editing

Our team at Perception crafted the main on end title sequence for Marvel’s Ms. Marvel. For this project, I was presented the amazing opportunity to pitch on a title sequence for the first time. After watching the first episode of the show, I imagined a bright and colorful, yet grounded and gritty, sequence of the streets of Jersey City filled with murals that represent Kamala Khan.

Halfway through the series, the main location switches from Jersey City to Karachi. Marvel Studios was interested in reflecting the switch into our title sequence. Knowing this could be both fun aesthetically and a great representation of Kamala’s journey, we began figuring out how to contrast both cities. The idea was that the audience would be seeing the world through the imaginative mind of Kamala Khan.

KARACHI

The murals designed by our team at Perception featured iconic art from Ms. Marvel’s comic book runs. We did our own research on the comics, reading several Ms. Marvel comic issues to find moments that were inspiring and mural-worthy. We selected several shots and collaborated with Marvel Studios to pick which ones were best, then customized them to fit the world we were inserting them into.

Other murals were made exclusively for this sequence by our team and were inspired by key moments of the show, while also paying homage to her comic book runs. To continue the theme of visual vibrancy, we designed every mural with electrifying, stunning colors.

MY DESIGN

For this specific mural, I wanted to play with one of Ms. Marvel’s most iconic comic book covers and the internal conflict she feels as a Pakistani girl from Jersey City. I attempted to create a contrast between Karachi, represented by the Moon and Star at the top, and Jersey City, at the bottom, while having Kamala sitting in between these two “different worlds” as she is trying to find herself. The swing was a way to position Kamala at the center of the frame while trying to send the message of instability and “back and forth”.

FILMING IN JERSEY CITY

Since New York City has been a focal point location throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I wanted this sequence to be completely recognizable as Jersey City. We were trying to show how Jersey City has many layers, just as Kamala does, and stress the importance of the contrast between the city, downtown, and the suburbs, and how there are so many different people and layers of culture.
